Web Design 101

6 Effective Principles to Creating Great Website Design.

Following a few fundamental web design principles will allow your business to increase its' earning potential and brand awareness. Establishing not only credibility but also trust with an aesthetically pleasing and functional website design will convert visitors into potential clients.

1. Consistent Design & Cues
Just as in life ... first impressions count and this especially holds true online. When your website is inconsistent in respects to colors, fonts and/or content headings you then lose out on critical opportunities to build trust. Minimizing distractions for your users is very important. Creating clear foundational pieces to your website, like a top left navigation or a contact us button that is clearly clickable, goes a long way in creating that minimalist but trustworthy website presence.
2. Intuitive Navigation & Call to Actions
Your website navigation structure should allow your visitors to land on any page on your website and find what they are looking for within just a few clicks. A well-structured navigation allows visitors to flow from one page to another without frustration. When done correctly your visitors should leave your website all their relevant questions answered and ideally with the intention to return to use your services.
3. Accessible Content
Website viewers do not read online but quickly scan for key headings and titles within your website. Having a website with content that is scannable but still consumable and understandable will go a long way in keeping your visitors interested. The physical real estate on most mobile devices is limited so you have to be concise and effective with page headings, search titles, page URLs and overall website content.
4. Responsiveness
Statistics show that a majority of all web browsing is now being done on mobile and tablet devices. As a result, optimizing your website experience for those devices and their users is very important. Designing a website that is flexible (responsive) enough to handle being viewed in the wide range of mobile devices now available will definitely be in your best interest for growing your business.
5. K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple St*pid)
Great web design is effective and in most cases it is as simple as that. Allowing your users to find the information they need and/or the services they are after with the least amount of hurdles is paramount. We live in a very fast paced world where visitors do not spend that much time and/or have long attentions spans so we have to make sure those moments are used efficiently. Removing any extraneous content from your website that serves no purpose and is just filler is always a great start.
6. Search Engine Optimization
SEO, for short, is the practice of optimizing your website pages so that they are found in search results for Google and other search engines. The primary goal of SEO is to increase the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic (non paid) search engine results. Writing content for your website should be structured and keyword-rich but also done in a natural sounding way. The goal here is to create content your target market is interested in while also answering their questions.
